Erasmus+ BIP CIRCLE – GOVERNING URBAN METABOLISM 3rd Edition Spring Workshop.
The Erasmus+ BIP CIRCLE – Governing Urban Metabolism course, now in its third year, is designed to develop critical skills and specialized expertise on the relationship between environmental sustainability and design. The goal is to help students imagine and design new urban environments that take into account the limitation of natural resources, enhancing technical and design innovation.
The in-person portion of the course will take place April 20-24, 2026, at theUniversity of Naples Federico II.
The program is consistent with the European Strategy for the Circular Economy (COM/2020/98 final) and uses a challenge-based, transnational and transdisciplinary approach geared toward sustainable planning and urban innovation.
The main objective is to provide operational skills to develop solutions capable of integrating sustainability and circularity into urban infrastructure and city regeneration processes.
The course focuses in particular on the regeneration of critical or brownfield urban areas and the development of local circular networks.
The main outcome of the course will be the design of Circular Infrastructure Hubs: neighborhood infrastructures located in areas to be regenerated, designed to foster activities of redistribution, repair, reuse and redesign of products. These facilities may be managed by private or third-sector entities.
The methodology adopted is systemic and based on group activities, including:
- the collection and analysis of examples of urban regeneration in partner countries (Italy, Austria, Iceland and the Czech Republic);
- the digital mapping of brownfield sites, with a focus on the Naples case study;
- the development of co-design strategies for circular supply chains, through the involvement of stakeholders according to the Living Lab model.
The project enhances the expertise of the Department of Architecture, a department of excellence, and the experience gained within the AURORA Alliance, particularly in workshops dedicated to the theme of Urban Metabolism.
Formative outcomes of the course include: the integration of social, technological and environmental aspects; the transformation of waste into opportunities for urban regeneration; and alignment with the New European Bauhaus and the 2030 Agenda, particularly Sustainable Development Goals 11 (Sustainable Cities) and 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production).
The final product of the course will be a design concept for the creation of circular infrastructure.
Teaching activities include lectures, seminars, field trips and a design workshop.
There are 15 places available for AURORA Alliance students enrolled in bachelor ‘s or first-year master’s degree programs; 10 places reserved for academic staff.
Proficiency in English is required.
To apply, students should send a motivational letter and resume to: anna.attademo@unina.it – marina.rigillo@unina.it.
